Guidelines
· Belt exams will usually be held three times a year for kids up to twelve years old, in December, April and July.
· Adults and juniors older than twelve will usually have the possibility to test twice a year, in September and March.
· Keep in mind that testing is neither mandatory nor a privilege, only people with a reasonable chance to pass will be invited to test.
· A student must be at least six years old to receive a yellow belt.
· Progression up to age fifteen will be with a stripe system.
· The belt order will be white, yellow, orange, green, purple (under 15), blue, brown and black.
· The brown belt level must be reached at least two years before the black belt exam.
· A student must be at least sixteen to take the black belt exam.
Test fees
The normal fee for belt exams is $25, which includes belt and diploma if applicable. Stripes are attached to the old belt and an official diploma will be issued only for advances in kyu grade, for instance yellow, orange etc. When an advance is made with a stripe a certificate acknowledging the accomplishment will be issued.
First time testers are encouraged to become members of the USJI. A yearly membership in the USJI currently runs $50 and allows the member participation in competitions, a small secondary health insurance, and includes the bi-monthly “Real Judo” magazine. Most of all, it supports judo in the USA and strengthens your club's representation in the FJI, the Florida Judo organization.

· BE AWARE that every successive belt requirement is in addition to the previous one. That is, in an orange belt test, the techniques required for yellow belt may also be asked.
· BE AWARE that all the aforementioned criteria will have a greater weight with each move up in rank. For instance at the yellow belt level throws are acceptable mainly to one side and standing still. The same throws at a higher level need to be demonstrated more and more from motion and to left and right.
