Press release 5/21/2006 Atlantic Beach judo player earns spot on U.S. national and Puerto Rican national teams After beating the #1 ranked fighter in the US 1-month ago in Houston at the U.S. Nationals, Hiram Cruz (35) from the Judo Ryu Jacksonville dojo in Atlantic Beach traveled to Puerto Rico this weekend and soundly defeated all the local hopefuls. This remarkable feat in 1-month earned him a spot on both the U.S. and Puerto Rican judo teams. He also now will travel to Argentina where on Friday May 26th he will compete with the best players from North and South America at the Pan American Championships. Coach Fiege: "Hiram is one of the best athletes in Jacksonville, amateur or pro, period. He has spectacular throws, plus he is in great condition, allowing him to keep pressing the pace of the fight the full 5 minutes. His specialty is the groundwork with pins, chokes and armbars." Hiram will return from Argentina in time to be the featured presenter at a club meet for North and Central Florida judo teams on Saturday, June 3rd.
